Cokie Roberts: Obama 'Most Energized' About Collins During WH Presser

On ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, veteran ABC news commentator and personality Cokie Roberts observed that President Barack Obama seemed to be most interested in wanting to talk about Jason Collins last week during his White House press conference.

Obama, on Tuesday, called a press conference to answer questions about foreign policy and the economy the day after Collins came out in a Sports Illustrated article. Obama had called Collins the day before while Michelle Obama had tweeted her support.

Roberts noted that Obama “left the stage and then came back to talk about” Collins during the presser and seemed to want to discuss Collins more than all the other pressing issues the White House needs to deal with.

“This was the thing he was most energized about,” Roberts said. “He clearly wanted to talk about Jason Collins.”

Roberts noted that Democrats have gone out of their way to court the gay community for political reasons.

Collins and Michelle Obama will appear at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in New York at the end of the month.
