William Rhoden, a sports columnist for the New York Times who happens to be black, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday that he was “uneasy” with Jason Collins being compared to Jackie Robinson.
He said the gay rights issue is one “unto itself.”
“Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer asked his panel, which consisted of Rhoden, former NFL player Domonique Foxworth, Washignton Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, and Sports Illustrated managing editor Chris Stone, if Collins’s announcement last Monday in a Sports Illustrated article that he was gay was a “Jackie Robinson moment.”
Despite the many inaccuracies with such a comparison, those in the media have relentlessly tried to make itas soon as Collins came out.
Rhoden also said there were people on the other side of the debate, and their voices should not be shut down.
