NFL Columnist: Owners Blackballing Tebow Because of 'Tebowmania'

A prominent NFL columnist for Yahoo! Sports wrote that he, as unlikely as it once seemed, is coming to the conclusion that Tim Tebow is being blackballed and persecuted because of “Tebowmania.” Many of Tebow’s fans are those who want a player who his unashamed of his Evangelical faith to succeed on the gridiron.

Michael Silver, the columnist, wrote that Tebow may be getting “unjustly blackballed” because NFL owners do not want to deal with the “circus” that is “Tebowmania” and what some NFL executives have called his rabid and “cult-like” fans.

Silver writes that the fact Tebow is not “even being given a chance to compete for a third-string job is troublesome.”

“And just as I feel compelled to call out the league when it comes to injustices like the dearth of minorities in offensive play-calling roles, the apparent blacklisting of a quarterback who went 7-4 as a starter in 2011 and won a memorable playoff game over the Pittsburgh Steelers doesn’t seem kosher to me,” Silver wrote.

Silver also rightfully notes that after the Steelers game, Tebow struggled mightily against New England. But Silver contends there are quarterbacks who have done much less than Tebow has or has less potential who are on NFL teams.

What may be more puzzling is that Tebow may even be a better pocket passer than he was two years ago in Denver.

Vinny Testaverde told the columnist that Tebow may actually be a better quarterback because he and ex-NFL quarterback and former Florida State star Chris Weinke made key footwork adjustments that “produced noticeable results.”

Silver said it is “not fair” that NFL teams have concluded they do not want to deal with Tebowmania.

“And sadly, the persecution complex shared by so many of Tebow’s fervent supporters seems to have become a self-fulfilling prophecy,” he concludes
