Bad news got worse for Miami Dolphins team officials as early absentee voting results reveal the Sun Life Stadium vote the Florida legislature refused to schedule likely was doomed to fail.
Florida lawmakers ended the 2013 annual session on May 3 without passing a bill permitting the vote on Sun Life Stadium renovations. The bill would have scheduled a May 14 vote on using public funds to subsidize 30% of a $350 million upgrade to the Dolphins’ home stadium. Early and absentee voting had already begun in anticipation of the vote’s authorization.
The Miami-Dade County Elections Department released a sample of the early and absentee vote totals Wednesday. The figures show the measure failing 57.32% to 42.68% among the 60,678 early and absentee votes cast in what would have been Tuesday’s election on the issue.
Miami Dolphins leaders are sending signals that the badly needed renovations to Sun Life Stadium will not happen. The Miami Herald reported last week Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said, “We cannot do this without a private-public partnership. At this time we have no intention of investing more.”
The Florida Legislature is not scheduled to meet again until 2014.
