Atlanta Hawks Choose Budenholzer As New Head Coach

Atlanta Hawks general manager Danny Ferry hired San Antonio Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer as the new head coach. Larry Drew was let go after they lost in the first round to the Indiana Pacers.

Budenholzer has been with the Spurs for 19 years and spent 17 years as their assistant. Coach Gregg Popovich made him the top assistant six years ago. He will continue to assist the Spurs through the playoffs. The Spurs swept the Memphis Grizzlies to advance to the conference finals, and he will join the Hawks after the Spurs’s season ends. Budenholzer released a statement and said he is excited to join the Hawks. From the AP:

“Ownership’s commitment to taking this organization to the next level and creating a unique and special culture, partnering with a general manager like Danny Ferry who I have great respect for, and building a roster that has terrific potential because of the existing core and the ensuing flexibility presents a rare and uniquely positive opportunity.”
