When the Chicago Blackhawks dramatically defeated the Detroit Red Wings in overtime in game seven of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday, they ensured that the last four Stanley Cup champions would be in the NHL’s final four.
Chicago will play the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference finals. The Boston Bruins will play the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference finals.
Los Angeles won the Stanley Cup last year. Boston won in 2011. Chicago won in 2010. And Pittsburgh won in 2009.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this has not happened since 1945.
