Tiger Woods, Clint Eastwood, Paula Cremer, and Arnold Palmer were among those who cut Caddyshack-inspired PSAs for the USGA to encourage kids to speed up the pace of play.

Slow play has been an issue in golf, and it made headlines when 14-year-old Chinese amateur got penalized a stroke for “slow play” during the most recent Masters. One video has Arnold Palmer hilariously telling Clint Eastwood to play his shot “while we’re young.” All of the videos incorporate the late Rodney Dangerfield reference from “Caddyshack.”

Those on the Tour–like Jim Furyk and Kevin Na–are notorious for their “slow play” that forces golfers playing in groups behind them to wait, at times, 30 minutes to tee off on holes.

“Pace of play has become a strategic priority for the USGA, and part of a larger leadership agenda to address the issues that threaten the long-term health of the game,” USGA president Glen D. Nager said. “Our new campaign underscores a commitment to educate golfers and golf facility managers in a fun and engaging manner about all the factors that contribute to pace of play and the role they can have in implementing practical solutions to the problem.”

Said Woods: “Pace of play is a big issue. Rounds of golf take too long and no one enjoys it … ‘While we’re young’ is part of the golfing vocabulary, and Caddyshack is iconic in our sport. This campaign is lighthearted, but it also shows that we need to pick up the pace of play.”

Added Creamer: “I think this campaign will have a huge impact with golfers because the message is fun. .. But the issue of slow play is serious, and in reality we all want to say, ‘Hey, while we’re young.'”

Each PSA directs people to a “Whilewereyoung” microsite where “where golfers and facility managers can sign a pledge to take personal measures to improve pace of play.”
