Astros Give No. 1 Pick $6.35 Million Signing Bonus


HOUSTON, June 19 (UPI) — The Houston Astros and the top overall 2013 draft pick, Stanford pitcher Mark Appel, have agreed to a contract, the team announced Wednesday.

No financial details were released, but the Houston Chronicle reported Appel will receive a $6.35 million signing bonus after the right-hander turned down $3.8 million from Pittsburgh last year.

Instead of signing with the Pirates, the Houston native returned to Stanford for his senior year, where he compiled a 10-4 mark with a 2.12 ERA and 130 strikeouts over 106 1/3 innings.
