A new Washington Post poll released on Tuesday found that 66% of Washington residents and 79% of Redskins fans do not want the football team to change its name.

The poll also found that 56% of Washington area adults and 53% of Redskins fans, respectively, believed the team name was “inappropriate,” and 82% of Washington residents and 81% of Redskins, respectively, would still support the team if they changed their name.

According to the poll, “the percentage advocating a shift in the D.C. area peaks at 39 percent among African Americans with college degrees.” Further, “34 percent of all area college graduates say change the name, compared with 21 percent of those with less formal education.”

According to the Post, the poll was conducted by telephone June 19 to 23, among a random sample of 1,106 Washington area adults. The margin of error is +/- 3.5 percentage points.
