Machado Top All-Star Reserve

Machado Top All-Star Reserve

As if Orioles do not have enough reasons to watch the All-Star game with three players in the starting line-up, Wins Above Replacement (WAR) calculates that another Oriole is the most valuable player in the league. Third baseman Manny Machado has produced 5.0 additional wins for the Orioles according to WAR, but he happens to play the same position as the second best player in the league. Below are the rankings for the 48 players who will start the game on the bench or in the bullpen.

WAR does not rate adjust to allow for players who have been injured, it just measures their total value to date. Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers would rank almost in the middle of this list with a WAR of 2.3 despite playing only 30 games to date, making a strong case that he should be one of the final additions after having one of the best write-in campaigns ever. Players are often selected based partly on their careers, so clearly Torii Hunter benefits from being one of the greatest center fielders even though this year his defensive ratings have dropped substantially.

Several players on the list with a WAR of less than 2.0 had very high WAR calculations last season. For purposes of this list, we assumed the players with the highest WAR ratings would start at pitcher and in the NL at DH.
