UN Visits N. Korea to Talk Sports

SEOUL, July 6 (UPI) — A United Nations delegation arrived in North Korea Saturday, apparently to discuss nothing more controversial than women’s soccer, North Korean media said.

The U.N. party was led by Wilfried Lemke, special adviser on sports for the development of peace, the North Korean Central News Agency said in a brief dispatch monitored in Seoul.

The announcement gave no details of Lemke’s agenda but South Korea’s Yonhap news service said it could be presumed he would try to promote sports as a means of easing regional tensions.

Lemke’s visit came one day after the North Korean women’s national soccer team was approved to play in the July 20-28 East Asian Cup tournament in South Korea. The squad will arrive in Seoul via Beijing July 18, Yonhap said.
