Mickelson Shoots 2-under 69

Phil Mickelson shot a 2-under 69 on the first day of the Open Championship at Muirfield, but he could have easily shot 4-under and been closer to lead.

The Scottish Open winner had four birdies and two bogeys on the round, but missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole and bogeyed the 18th.

“I played well,” Mickelson said. “I had a spurt there in the middle of the round where I had some technical difficulties and hit some poor shots but was able to make pars and then turn it around.”

He said he tried to get back the stroke he felt he lost on the 17th, and that may have led to his bogey on the closing hole.

As of this writing, Zach Johnson is the clubhouse leader at 5-under.
