Open Championship Leader Jimenez Trying to Become Oldest Major Winner

Cool, calm, and relaxed, 49-year-old Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez will seek to become the oldest major winner in history as he enters the weekend leading the Open Championship at Muirfield at -3.

Jimenez shot a steady even-par 71 on Friday, and he will seek to win his first major as well. He has had three top-3 finishes at major tournaments, but has never broken through. He will enter Saturday with a one-shot lead.

After his round on Thursday, Jimenez said he loves golf and the pressure of big-time golf and tournaments. He is as imaginative with his golf shots as he is carefree and suave. He walked past Keegan Bradley with a cigar and a bottle of wine after Thursday, and Bradley remarked on Twitter that Jimenez may be the coolest person alive.

A true bon vivant, Jimenez, always unflappable, may have the perfect mental makeup (Tiger Woods is another who can handle the pressures of this weekend with his patented mental toughness and ability to grind out rounds like no golfer in recent memory) to handle the pressures of a golf course and setup that Phil Mickelson said would see some “carnage” this weekend.
