From King to President: James Contemplating Leading Union

Lebron James is the uncontested NBA leader on the court. Rumor has it that “King James” is seeking to become the leader off the court as well.

According to Fox Sports’ Jason Whitlock, Lebron is mulling a bid to become the league’s union president.  A source commented to Whitlock regarding the situation by saying:

“It’s something he has talked about with a small group of people. He was
very vocal at the meeting during the All-Star Weekend about the need
for the union to dramatically change. There is a new executive director
coming in and new commissioner. He recognizes that this is the time for
the union to change.”

As president, Lebron’s skills and visibility would lend unprecedented power and credibility to the position. While other stars served as union presidents decades ago, Lebron would be the first iconic mega-star of the modern era to lead the Players’ Association.

While Lebron certainly would be a powerful president, Whitlock notes that other sources believe it is unlikely that he will commit to something as time consuming as becoming the union president given the already enormous constraints on his time.

OKC’s Derek Fisher, whose term expired this summer, is unlikely to seek to retain the title, and it is unclear what Jerry Stackhouse, the current Vice President, will do. It is unlikely that either of these aging vets, or anyone else in the NBA, could defeat Lebron if he decided to vie for the position.
