NOTES: If the playoffs had started before today’s games, Baltimore and Texas (both wildcard) were tied for the final AL playoff spot at +12 games above .500, while Cleveland would have missed by a half game at +11.

In the NL, Cincinnati (wildcard) and Los Angeles (NL West Champ) would have been the two playoff teams with the worst record – both at +10 games above .500, and they would have both been 3 ½ games ahead of Arizona (+3).

Saturday the Dodgers improved to +11 with their franchise-record 13th consecutive victory, a 3-0 shutout of the Cubs, despite throwing perhaps their worst starter against the Cubs’ best. Chris Capuano threw shutout ball into the seventh inning for his second straight game as the Dodgers are starting to run away with the NL West. Yasiel Puig continued to amaze by beating out two infield singles and coming around to score the first run.

Another California team moved into a stronger position for the playoffs, as Home Run Derby champ Yoenis Cespedes hit a 2-run homer in the 4-2 win. The A’s are now 3 ½ games ahead of the Rangers, who many believe will lose their slugger Nelson Cruz to a long suspension on Monday.
