In April, offensive tackle Luke Joeckel was at the center of the football universe as he was in contention to be the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft before ultimately being selected #2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. This fall, all eyes could be on his twin brother Matt, the potential starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies.
With the future of Johnny Manziel and his college eligibility in doubt, Matt Joeckel could be called upon to keep the Aggies in contention. A junior, Joeckel stands at 6’4″, 234lbs., a big quarterback but significantly smaller than his massive brother who is poised for a standout rookie season in the NFL.
Texas A&M, a consensus top ten team and title contender, currently has Joeckel, who has thrown for a total of 11 passes and 42 yards in his career, listed as the backup quarterback on the depth chart. Last season’s #2 quarterback, Jameill Showers, transferred to UTEP to avoid sitting behind Johnny Football.
Joeckel’s competition for the job that may or may not be available appears to be Matt Davis, a redshirt freshman who was the #3-ranked dual threat quarterback in the Class of 2012, according to Rivals.com.
No decision has yet been made about Manziel, who could face a suspension that would likely cause him to miss the September 14 contest against Alabama or even a complete loss of eligibility.
