Christie Defends Mark Sanchez: He's Been Treated 'Awfully'

Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie defended New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez on Monday, saying the inconsistent quarterback out of USC has been treated “awfully.”

“It seems like the fans have amnesia about this guy,” Christie said. “Yeah, he was awful last year, but by the way, he had no weapons last year to throw to. He had no receiving corps, he had no running game and the offensive line was below average.

Christie, a devoted Cowboys fan, said he felt New York’s ownership has been determined to play Geno Smith, whom the team drafted out of West Virginia. Smith struggled mightily this weekend with the first team, throwing three interceptions and stepping out of the back of the end zone for a safety against the New York Giants in a preseason game.

“So what are you looking for from the guy? I think they’ve treated him awfully,” he said. “It seems like they’re determined … and I think this new general manager [John Idzik] is just determined to play the guy that he drafted [Smith].”
