No American Men Left at US Open

There are no American men in the round of 16 at the U.S. Open, the first time that’s happened at a tournament that began in 1881.

The last of the host country’s 15 entrants was 109th-ranked Tim Smyczek, and the wild-card recipient lost 6-4, 4-6, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the third round to 43rd-ranked Marcel Granollers of Spain on Sunday night.

It’s symbolic of the downturn for elite men’s tennis in the United States. No one from the country reached the fourth round at any of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2013. And last month, for the first time in the 40 years of ATP rankings, there was a week with zero U.S. men in the top 20.

Granollers will play No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.
