After Jason Dufner won his first major at the PGA Championship this year, he promptly voided a $750 check he had won from a professional golfer two days before tournament started.
According to the Golf Channel, Rob Labritz, a New York club professional who made it into this year’s PGA Championship, ended up playing a round with Keegan Bradley against Jason Dufner and Dustin Johnson the Tuesday before this year’s PGA Championship.
Labritz had cancel some lessons and clinics just to play with the three PGA Tour professionals, which a former coach of his had set up for him. After playing for a $500 closeout, “Labritz and Bradley found themselves $750 in the hole – which was a slight problem for the club pro.”
“I didn’t have $750 in my wallet, so I went into the locker, got my checkbook out and wrote a check to Dufner. I left it in his locker,” Labritz told the Golf Channel.
Dufner won the PGA to win his first major five days later, getting a $1.445 million winner’s check. He wrote Labritz a letter and returned his check with the word “VOID” written through it.
The letter said:
ROB,
GREAT TIME PLAYING WITH YOU LAST TUESDAY. I JUST COULDN’T CASH THIS CHECK. ALL THE BEST TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN 2013 + HOPE TO SEE YOU IN 2014 @ VALHALLA.
JASON DUFNER
