Ladies and gentlemen, Serena Williams showed on Sunday why she is #1 in the world. Williams won the 2013 US Open, her second in a row. She beat Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-1 in a thrilling rematch from last year’s final.
This is Williams’s fifth US Open title and her 17th Grand Slam singles title. She won $2.6 million in prize money and $1 million for having the best results during the North American summer hard court tournaments. She is 67-4 in 2013.
It looked like she would win it after she was up 4-1 in the second set. Azarenka quickly came back and broke Williams when she was up 5-4 and 6-5 and eventually pushed it to a tiebreak. Azarenka served really well and Williams hit the serve back wide. On the eighth try Williams sent a backhand long and Azarenka wins the set.
Williams was frustrated and mad because of the wind. She took it out on her racket, but eventually calmed down. The third set was all Williams. She used her powerful serves and won nine aces. Azarenka could not serve well, which caught up to her in the end. Too many double faults and unforced errors allowed Williams to win 6-1.
Williams is 98-5 with 14 titles since she lost in the first round at the 2012 French Open. This victory proves Williams is not going anywhere anytime soon.
