#12 Oklahoma State Runs Over Lamar, 59-3

Distraction? What distractions? #12 Oklahoma State destroyed Lamar 59-3 in their home opener at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Sports Illustrated has printed hyped up charges against the school, many disproven and laughed at, but fans came out strong to support the team. A record 59,061 showed up.

“The crowd was a big factor for us,” [Josh] Stewart said. “The walk was super-packed. That was exciting to see, and it shows you that no matter what, Stillwater has got your back.”

Despite the dominance, coach Mike Gundy was not impressed. He said the team was sloppy and sluggish. Quarterback J.W. Walsh was stellar against UTSA last week, but was mediocre this week. He was 17/30 with only 181 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He only averaged six yards per throw. Clint Chelf replaced Walsh halfway through the third quarter. He was 6/6 with two touchdowns, including one rushing touchdown. He averaged 15 yards per throw.

It was their running game and special teams that won the game. Jeremy Smith had 10 carries and rushed for three touchdowns and Desmond Roland rushed for a touchdown. Josh Stewart returned three punts for 114 yards and ran one back for a touchdown in the third quarter. The Cowboys scored a touchdown on their first three possessions and only punted once.

The Cowboys scored 115 points in their three games. Next week is a bye, and then they open Big 12 play at West Virginia on September 28.
