Auburn Athlete Arrested for Attempting to Play 'Grand Theft Auto' in Real Life

An Auburn University lacrosse player was arrested on Saturday in Louisiana after he “allegedly stole a truck, kidnapped a woman, and hit several parked cars,” before the Auburn-LSU game at Death Valley on Saturday night.

Zachary Burgess, the freshman lacrosse player, also reportedly told an officer that he “wanted to see what it was really like to play the video game Grand Theft Auto.”

According to NBC33 in Baton Rough, “the incident happened on Saturday, Sept. 21 shortly before 2:30 a.m.,” and “witnesses say the owner of the truck pulled up in the parking lot of the bar and got out of the vehicle.” He “left the truck running and a female passenger was sitting in a truck alone,” when the suspect “got in and tried to steal the vehicle.” He also, according to the female passenger, “forcibly” held her captive in the truck against her will before she was able to “jump out of the vehicle and get to safety.”

Burgess “allegedly struck a total of nine vehicles,” and “was arrested and charged with Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Hit-and-Run (9 counts), and Simple Kidnapping.” He was released on Sunday after posting an $80,000 bond.
