CARSON CITY, Nev., Sept. 27 (UPI) — Rumors that O.J. Simpson was caught stealing cookies in prison have been greatly exaggerated, Nevada corrections officials said Friday.
The cookie-stealing story was originally reported by the National Enquirer, citing unnamed sources, and spread widely. But the Los Angeles Times said it got a different story.
In the Enquirer version, a guard caught Simpson stuffing cookies down his shirt and pulled them out.
Simpson apparently has gained weight during his time behind bars. The NFL says he weighed 212 pounds when he was playing for the Buffalo Bills, and Fox Sports estimates his current weight at 300 — and presumably more of it is fat and less muscle than in his football days.
Simpson was convicted in 2008 of kidnapping and armed robbery aimed at a sports memorabilia dealer. He says he made an ill-advised attempt to get some of his own property back.
He can expect to be paroled in four years and is also awaiting a judge’s ruling on his appeal for a new trial.
