Four women at the University of Connecticut filed a federal lawsuit against the school and claim the school did not protect them and failed to properly respond to their sexual abuse claims. A total of seven women asked for a federal Title XI investigation of the school. One of the alleged attackers is a member of the UConn football team.
The women are represented by feminist lawyer Gloria Allred and she filed the complaint to the US Department of Education.
“They are simply tired of seeing women being raped and sexually assaulted at the university while the administration chose deliberate indifference,” Allred said.
Rose Richi reportedly did not want to report her rape because he was a member of the football team. She said athletes are very privileged on campus. When she found the courage to report the officer told her he did not believe her.
Erica Daniels was allegedly drugged and raped by a co-worker. When she went to the Office of Community standards she was told there was not enough information. Kylie Angell was allegedly raped and UConn expelled her attacker, but allowed him back after two weeks. She only found out when he caressed her in the cafeteria. She broke down at the news conference when she told the media what an officer told her after she reported the encounter.
‘The officer told me, “Women need to stop spreading their legs like peanut butter or rape is going to keep happening until the cows come home”,’ Angell said. ‘Shocked, I left feeling confused, violated, traumatized and vulnerable.’
UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Rietz said the school will asses the lawsuit.
“We care deeply for the safety and welfare of all of our students,” she said. “The University does all in its power to appropriately investigate and handle such claims in a manner that is fully compliant with the law and grounded in both sensitivity and fairness.”
