Marcleudo de Melo Ferreira, 22, fell to his death while working on a stadium in the Amazon jungle for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Ferreira fell from the roof of the stadium when his cable broke and he crashed almost 155 feet to the ground. He died in the hospital at 4AM. So far, there have been deaths at the stadiums in Manaus, Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Palmeira as the nation tries to build the infrastructure for the World Cup.
Andrade Gutierrez, the Brazilian firm building the Amazon stadium, said in a statement that Ferreira worked for a company that had been contracted to build the arena’s cover and an internal investigation of the incident would be conducted.
Questions about safety will be brought up again as Brazil races to finish the stadiums on time. The country admitted six of the stadiums will not be ready by the December 31 FIFA deadline. And Two people have already died in the Sao Paulo stadium when a crane collapsed in the arena and damaged the stadium, which will only postpone completion.
There have been many other interruptions in Brazil as well. The Confederations Cup, a World Cup warmup, was cancelled after people showed up to protest. Citizens are upset by poor public services, high taxes and the lavish spending on the World Cup. The anarchist group Black Bloc promised to cause mayhem during the World Cup.
