Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason: Belichick Greatest NFL Coach

In CBS’s pre-game show before the New England Patriots defeated the Indianapolis Colts 43-22 on Saturday in what was one of Bill Belichick’s better coaching efforts in his career, Bill Cowher, the former Steelers coach who was one of his fiercest rivals, said Belichick was the “best ever” coach in the NFL. Boomer Esiason agreed and said Belichick would go down as the greatest coach ever but said that the “Spygate” scandal will always linger over him.

Belichick told Cowher about what he has to do to keep the message fresh for his players, his father, his sons, and how he has never lost his passion for coaching. He said he wanted to be remembered as someone who has given as much to the game as the game has given to him. He said without football his family would probably have worked at a steel mill.

He also said that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady studies so much film that Belichick has to be as prepared as Brady when he goes into a meeting with his star quarterback. He said this is a good thing but also very demanding on coaches, who have to keep up with Brady–and his passion for the game. He called Brady one of the toughest players he’s ever coached.
