As global warming advocates continue to insist that our “overheated'” planet is approaching catastrophic conditions, America is experiencing its coldest month of the century. What may be even more confusing for Americans is that Super Bowl Sunday may become Super Bowl Monday.
Weather forecasters are predicting another huge Arctic blast of freezing air to cast paralyzing cold weather over the biggest global sporting event, which will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on February 2. Temperatures are making the U.S. colder than the North Pole and are expected to plunge even more by game day. The Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos have been warned to stay on high alert for changes to the scheduling of the first Super Bowl to be played in an open-air stadium in a cold-weather city. Eric Grubman, NFL vice president of business operations, told the Denver Post: “We are advising teams to prepare in case a contingency plan goes into effect.”
Over the last week, East Coast and Midwest portions of the country have been hammered by widespread snow and ice storms and have endured temperatures well below zero degrees and wind chill factors descending deep into negative numbers. The Weather Channel reported that in Minneapolis, schools were closed as the mercury plunged down to -18 with a wind chill of -38. The President of Commodity Weather Group LLC, Matt Rogers, said: “The crazy thing is that the current cold snap this week looks to be a bit more modest in the face of next week’s outbreak. The cold coming for the end of January is sufficient to make this the coldest month of the century so far and the coldest the Lower 48 has felt in the last 20 years.”
Newly elected Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has left many residents livid with his failure to react to the consequences of last week’s Winter Storm Janus. New York’s Upper East Side residents are complaining that the staunchly leftist mayor, who ran against income inequality as the core of his campaign, is intentionally trying to make the lives of the wealthy one-percent miserable by not plowing the streets between East 59th and 79th streets. De Blasio’s failure to act prompted one resident to assert, “He is trying to get us back. He is very divisive and political.” Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty claims that the system’s “GPS was not working,” which created delays and problems in the area.
Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing in Minneapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Cleveland through the end of the month. In Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City, and Indianapolis, temperatures may only surpass the freezing mark on one or two days through Jan. 31. And what can only be considered rare: temperatures will dip to near freezing during a few nights along the typically mild upper Gulf Coast.
