Cross-Country Skier Caldwell Inspires

Norway’s Maika Caspersen Falla won the cross-country sprint at Sochi on Tuesday. But that’s what observers expected. It’s Norway’s 100th medal in cross country skiing, after all.

Americans have never medaled in the sport. So, Sophie Caldwell’s out-of-nowhere appearance in the finals inspired and surprised. Though she stumbled in the finals, and finished dead last, Caldwell’s Cinderella-story Olympics provides hope for an American program long on it but short on gold, silver, and bronze.

Norway’s Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg finished second, and Vesna Fabjan of Slovenia missed out on silver by .02 of a second. At 23, the Dartmouth graduate looks to improve on her performance four years from now in Pyeongchang.
