Sochi 2014: US Snowboarder Jackie Hernandez Taken Off Course on Stretcher

American snowboarder Jackie Hernandez crashed and suffered a concussion during the snowboard cross qualifying. The courses at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park have led to numerous injuries.

Hernandez took the spill as she caught some big air coming off a jump when she landed hard, twisted and turned before coming to a stop. She was motionless on the course before medical personnel arrived.

She was taken off the course on a stretcher to the medical tent.

Helane Olafsen of Norway was the medal favorite, but she crashed after one jump turned 180 degrees. She fell hard on her back and shoulder. Medical personnel rushed out and removed her on a stretcher.

“Helene has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee,” Norway Olympic team doctor Ellen Moen said in a new release. She also has an injury to the ligament on the inside of the same knee, and a meniscus injury.

“She will most likely have to have an operation on the knee, but we cannot say anything more about it yet.”

Eva Samkova of the Czech Republic easily won the gold medal in the snowboard cross. Canada’s Dominique Maltais won the silver and France’s Chloe Trespeuch. America’s Lindsey Jacobellis did not even make it to the medal round, but won the consolation final. However, she really wanted to win after inadequate performances in the last three Olympics.
