Americans Evenly Split on Unionization of College Athletes

Americans are evenly split on whether college athletes should be able to unionize. 

According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, 47 percent support it and 47 percent oppose. 

The poll found that 66 percent of non-whites supported “the idea but 56 percent of whites opposing it. Nearly two-thirds of respondents under the age of 40 were in favor, but 57 percent of individuals over age 50 were against.” In addition, “more than six in 10 Democrats and nearly half of independents support allowing college players to unionize” while fewer than three in 10 Republicans support unionization.

In January, Northwestern football players filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to form a union
