There is a blonde on the cover of Golf Digest and according to the magazine she is one of the top celebrities in golf today. But she’s not a golfer. She’s just gorgeous. She’s Paulina Gretzky.
Yes, the Great One’s daughter is on the cover of Golf Digest. She is engaged to PGA pro Dustin Johnson, but that is about all to the golf connection. Unsurprisingly, members of the LPGA aren’t happy about the cover.
“It’s frustrating for female golfers,” Stacy Lewis, the No. 3-ranked player in the world, told reporters at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, according to USA Today. “It’s the state of where we’ve always been. We don’t get the respect for being the golfers we are.
“Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines, but at the same time you like to see a little respect for the women’s game.”
And Golf Digest should sell some magazines. Actress Janet Jones’s daughter is dressed in a white bikini top with white leggings. Her pose squeezes her chest together and shows ample cleavage. Golf Digest posted a tweet from someone who never heard of the magazine until this issue.
Editor-in-Chief Jerry Tarde said Gretzky “might get some new people interested in the game.” The front cover said she has six moves that will help lower scores. The website provided samples of the pictures and it shows her scantily clad performing yoga moves.
Golf Channel anchor Holly Sanders, provocatively dressed in a manner akin to Miss Gretzky, was on the May 2013 issue and model Kate Upton appeared on the December 2013 issue with Arnold Palmer. An LPGA player has not appeared on the cover since Lorena Ochoa in 2008.
But LPGA players do not think this will help them.
“It’s frustrating because it’s Golf Digest, it’s not Sports Illustrated‘s swimsuit issue,” World Golf Hall of Famer Juli Inkster told Karen Crouse on Thursday from Mission Hills Country Club about the May issue featuring the scantily clad figure of Wayne Gretzky’s daughter and Dustin Johnson’s betrothed.
“I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have. It’s like, what do you have to do to get a little respect?” seven-time major champion Inkster, who was one of 11 women since 1969 to make the GD cover, wondered. “I’m guaranteeing you right now, it was not a woman editor who chose that cover.”
