Funeral services were held on Saturday for an Alabama swimming star and hero who died on Monday while saving his girlfriend’s life during the tornadoes that hit the state.
John Servati, a 21-year-old University of Alabama swimmer from Mississippi who was a U.S. Open qualifier, “is credited with saving his girlfriend’s life by holding up a retaining wall — long enough for her to escape while the storm thrashed his house.”
Lauren Swann, his girlfriend, said, “He saved my life and I shouldn’t be here. I mean, he’s my hero.”
Servati’s funeral was held at ” Calvary Baptist Church in Tupelo, Miss., where he attended high school,” and “members of the University of Alabama swimming and diving team acted as honorary pallbearers.”
“John Servati was an extraordinary young man of great character and warmth who had a tremendously giving spirit,” said Dennis Pursley, head coach of the University of Alabama swim team.
Servati was on the Dean’s List and “set school records in both of his swim events: freestyle and backstroke.”
