Michael Sam on Negative Tweets: 'I Don't Read 'Em'

At his introductory press conference on Tuesday that he handled extremely well, Michael Sam, the first openly gay football player to be drafted, was asked how he handles some of the negativity after he came out and was drafted.

“You wanna know how I handle it? I don’t read ’em,” Sam said.

Miami Dolphins player Don Jones was fined and sent to “educational training” for Tweeting “OMG” and “horrible” after Sam made out with his boyfriend after he got drafted on national television. Former football players and analysts have said smashing a cake on his boyfriend’s face and kissing him went too far regardless of the sexual orientation of the individuals.

Sam said nobody said anti-gay words to him during college since nobody knew he was gay. But he said that “if someone wants to say something” in the NFL he will make his opponent’s team pay by sacking their quarterback.
