Prince Fielder Done for Season

The Texas Rangers confirm that they expect Prince Fielder to undergo season-ending surgery on a herniated disc in his neck. The first baseman reportedly seeks a second opinion in the hopes of salvaging his season.

Fielder has struggled in his first year in Texas. His batting average, at .247, marks a career low. Through 150 at bats, the power-hitting scion of Cecil Fielder boasts just three home runs. He knocked 50 balls out of the park in 2007 but just 25 last year.

Fielder’s injury serves as a the latest Rangers setback. Losing two pitchers to Tommy John surgery, including lefty Martin Perez, Texas has, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, experienced 17 players drop to the disabled list this season.
