Shane Battier: Michigan Dems Courted Me to Run for U.S. Senate

Shane Battier of the Miami Heat reportedly turned down offers from Michigan Democrats to run for U.S. Senate this year.

According to a Grantland report on Tuesday, “the Michigan Democratic Party recently called him to see if he might consider running to replace U.S. Senator Carl Levin,” but Battier declined.

A Michignan Democratic Party official told the Huffington Post on Tuesday that they “were surprised to hear Shane Battier mentioned for the first time this afternoon as a possible candidate for U.S. Senate” while another official reportedly said the though he was “not aware” of anyone reaching out to Battier, he could not “categorically rule it out.”

Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) is running against Republican Terri Lynn Land for Levin’s seat.

Battier is a Michigan native who left to play college basketball at Duke and has often been mentioned as an athlete who could one day go into politics.
