2014 French Open: #5 Petra Kvitova, #11 Ana Ivanovic Fall in Third Round

More top seeded women fell at the 2014 Roland Garros French Open. Svetlana Kuznetsova, #27, defeated #5 Petra Kvitova 7-6, 1-6, 7-9. Lucie Safarova, #23, defeated #11 Ana Ivanovic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Kvitova and Kuznetsova’s match lasted over three hours. Kvitova struggled throughout the match and was visited by a trainer many times. She finally called for an off-court medical timeout and returned with a bandage on her upper right leg.

But it was the little things that brought down Kvitova, just like Serena Williams, Li Na, and Agnieszka Radwanska. She committed 65 unforced errors compared to Kuznetsova’s 20 unforced errors. Kvitova had three chances to win the match in the third set, but Kuznetsova broke her all three times.

Ivanovic was also brought down by numerous unforced errors. She committed 30 while Safarova only had 18. But Safarova plays decent against Ivanovic and her record is now 5-2 against her. It is Safarova’s second time in her career to reach the fourth round at the French Open.

On the men’s side, #5 David Ferrer glided to a victory against #32 Andreas Seppi, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. American John Isner, seeded #10, will face #6 Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.
