2014 French Open: #4 Roger Federer Loses in Fourth Round to #18 Ernests Gulbis

2014 French Open: #4 Roger Federer Loses in Fourth Round to #18 Ernests Gulbis

It was a fight to the end, but #18 Ernests Gulbis came out on top of #4 Roger Federer to move to the quarterfinals. He won 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and it is Federer’s earliest defeat at Roland Garros since 2004.

The two men were equally matched in the first two sets, but Gulbis blew Federer away in the third set. Federer had 12 unforced errors and never broke Gulbis. However, Gulbis broke Federer twice and committed only two unforced errors.

Gulbis almost had it in the fourth set, but Federer found his fire and at the last minute forced a fifth set. He broke Gulbis two out of three times, but the last time was all he needed to receive one more shot at the quarterfinal.

But somewhere in the break between set four and set five Federer lost the momentum. Gulbis glided to an easy 5-1 lead before Federer showed any life, but it did not last long. Gulbis ended it 6-3.

Gulbis will play against #6 Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.
