Seventh Seed David Ferrer Falls to Andrey Kuznetsov at Wimbledon

LONDON–Unseeded Andrey Kuznetsov defeated seventh seed David Ferrer 6-7, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. It was all Kuznetsov during the match.

The first set went to a tiebreak and Ferrer barely won. Spectators could tell Ferrer was not on top of this game and Kuznetsov was disappointed to lose the first set after he lost four chances to win it. This set tired out Ferrer and Kuznetsov breezed through the second set with three breaks and won all seven of his net points.

Ferrer found some wind in the third round to break Kuznetsov two times. But apparently it took everything out of him and he could not compete against Kuznetsov, who came roaring back in the fourth and fifth set. He took advantage of Ferrer’s sloppy play. He broke him early to a 3-1 start in the fourth set with three aces.

In set five, Kuznetsov broke Ferrer three out of five times and won six out of eight net points. Usually unforced errors come back to bite tennis players, but Kuznetsov remained composed and overcame his errors.

Ferrer made the third round in ten consecutive Grand Slams before Wednesday. This is Kuznetsov’s first trip to the third round and his first victory over a top ten opponent. Next up for Kuznetsov is Leonardo Mayer, who defeated 21-seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
