Serena Williams Withdraws from Wimbledon Doubles Due to Viral Illness

LONDON–The referee’s office at Wimbledon said Serena Williams has a viral infection, and this is why Serena and her sister Venus withdrew from a doubles match against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele on Tuesday.

After a troubled warm-up, doctors rushed out to the court to consult with Serena, who once had to recover from a life-threatening blood clot. She looked distressed and panicky, but no one could tell what the problem was. Serena eventually convinced the doctor that she could play, and the match started.

But it did not get better. The sisters were down 0-3 when they withdrew. Serena could not hold onto the ball and she double faulted on her serves.
