Josh Gordon's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Weekend

Life is going from bad to really bad for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was pulled over and arrested early Saturday morning in Raleigh, North Carolina for speeding and driving while impaired (DWI).

According to NBC3 WKYC, the arrest comes just a few days after the announcement of a suspension hearing in late July for Gordon’s recent violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He faces a likely one-year suspension.

Remarkably, all of this comes on the heels of last year’s two-game suspension for Gordon on a separate league-sanctioned drug test violation. Not surprisingly, when Gordon was at Baylor, he was also suspended for drug-test violations.

Nevertheless, despite missing the first two games in 2013, Gordon broke the all-time single-season receiving yards record for the Browns when he caught passes for 1,646 yards.

As Lorenzo (Robert De Niro) in the movie A Bronx Tale tells his son Calogero, “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” Gordon’s situation is looking pretty darn sad. Now, according to Deadspin, it turns out that the man responsible for paying Gordon’s $500 bail is none other than Haydn Patrick “Fats” Thomas, currently on three years of probation for his own legal problems.

Fats is a self described party promoter and a former felon, who pleaded guilty last year to a firearms violation, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute. Aside from being associated with other athletes, including basketball player P.J. Hairston–who endured his own problems this weekend–Thomas served as the security manager at the same strip club that employed Crystal Mangum, the dancer who falsely put the finger on a group of innocent Duke lacrosse players.
