Hunter Pence Saves Phillie Phanatic, Then the Giants

Hunter Pence saved the Phillie Phanatic. Then he saved the Giants.

The right fielder heroically performed mouth-to-snout resuscitation on the 35-year-old mascot listed as hailing from the Galapagos Islands but rumored to come from outer space. The fat phat Phillie Phanatic collapsed after attempting sit-ups. Pence’s good deed came after the phurry, phriendly creature mocked Pence’s old-school, high-socks look.

Pence subsequently knocked in the tying, winning, and insurance runs with a bases-clearing double off closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning. The hit gave the Giants their sixth win in seven games. San Phrancisco stands atop the NL West. Philadelphia sits at the bottom of the NL East.

Pence offered a stoic response to his game-saving hit: “Just go up to compete, try to see the ball, and hit the ball.”

He showed more phire regarding his life-saving antics: “I just didn’t want him to die.”
