Does Payroll Mean Playoffs? MLB Salaries and Wins Since 1998

Two years ago the Washington Nationals put together a 98-win playoff team on only $81 million in salaries, the 11th best deal since 1998 based on calculations detailed in a separate post. They paid more this year, and will not win as many games, but they are back in the playoffs. The list below details the salaries and wins of all 30 major league teams since 1998, and where each squad ranked among the best and worst deals of all time.

The 2014 wins are based on each team’s current pace. The following are the factors for determining the 2014 equivalent of each team’s salary (e.g., salaries are 11% higher this season than in 2013, 180% higher than in 1998, etc.): 2014 1.00, 2013 1.11, 2012 1.17, 2011 1.24, 2010 1.26, 2009 1.30, 2008 1.29, 2007 1.39, 2006 1.48, 2005 1.58, 2004 1.68, 2003 1.62, 2002 1.71, 2001 1.79, 2000 2.07, 1999 2.39, and 1998 2.80.
