Miguel Cabrera Refuses Playoff Bonus

Miguel Cabrera Refuses Playoff Bonus

For Miguel Cabrera, it’s not about the Benjamins. It’s about the ring.

The Tigers first baseman refused to sign papers enabling him to receive his playoff bonus. “I’m not signing anything,” Cabrera explained to pitcher Max Scherzer, according to USA Today. The star pitcher tried convince Cabrera to sign the papers–to no avail.

A befuddled Victor Martinez figured his Spanish might work where Scherzer’s English failed. But Cabrera remained adamant: “I just want the ring.”

The two-time MVP embarked upon the first year of a decade-long, $292 million contract this season. He evidently can afford to miss a $300,000 or so check should the Tigers do what they haven’t done in thirty years this fall.

Detroit’s quest for its fifth World Series triumph begins in Baltimore this afternoon when the Tigers play the Orioles at 5:37 Eastern.
