Serena Williams surprisingly lost her first set to Italian Flavia Pennetta at the Hopman Cup in Australia. Usually when she loses, Williams tends to let it get to her head, but this time she tried another route.

“Is it illegal to order an espresso?” she asked the umpire.

Yes, Williams ordered an espresso to provide her with a much needed caffeine boost. The umpire ruled an espresso not against the rules and a ball girl brought her a cup. The espresso worked. Williams fired back to win the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-0.

“I am a coffee drinker and I didn’t have mine this morning and I was just feeling it,” she said. “So I had to get some coffee in me. I told them to just give me a shot of espresso. I asked them if it was legal–‘Is it illegal to have a shot of espresso?’–because I had never done it before. I needed some espresso. I needed to wake up. The jet lag gets you all the time.”
