Philadelphia Eagles Erase ‘Redskins’ Name in Schedule Info

The Philadelphia Eagles waded into the attack on the name “Redskins” with a decision to eliminate the rival team’s name from game schedules and media packets.

Members of sports media noticed something missing in the announcement of Sunday’s game in its weekly media guide. The team simply noted that the Eagles faced “Washington” this weekend omitting the team’s actual name, Redskins.

Matt Lombardo Tweeted the absence of the team name, calling the move “interesting.”

Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com notes that the Eagles’ past media guides mark the other rival teams throughout the guides by team names. Only the Redskins are named solely by the city from which they hail.

For instance, Shorr-Parks counted up 18 mentions of “Falcons” in one packet, 15 uses of “Cowboys” in another, and an equal usage of “Jets.” Yet the word “Redskins” doesn’t appear a single time in the guide.

For its part the Eagles have refused to make any formal announcement of its decision to drop the Redskins name from its scheduling info. But if they make it official, this will mark as the first time another NFL team has taken a stand against the Redskins name.
