Chael Sonnen: Ronda Rousey a ‘Media Creation,’ ‘Never As Good As Media Said’

Chael Sonnen may not find himself invited to Ronda Rousey’s victory party after her fight against Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 on December 30th, if there is a victory party of course.

In an interview with Jim Ross this week, MMA fighter and analyst Sonnen said that he’s pretty unfamiliar with Nunes, however, he felt familiar enough with Rousey to say that the media is responsible for her success.

Sonnen told Ross, “Ronda was created by the media. Ronda was never as good as the media said she was. She was never as big of a draw or as big of a selling piece as they said she was. That’s not a knock on Ronda. That’s just a fair assessment. She’s very good.”

If that’s not a knock, I’d hate to see Sonnen knock someone. However, Sonnen did have some praise for Rousey. Sonnen said, “Ronda is gritty, she’s tough, she’s a fantastic competitor. Her will and her heart is what took her to the top more than her skill set.”

If Ronda Rousey’s coaches needed some bulletin board material before the big fight, I think they found it.
