New Jersey Governor Chris Christie may be having a bit of trouble in Trenton, but he just might have found an escape hatch with the announcement that next week he will fill in for sports radio talker Mike Francesa on New York’s WFAN.

Fresh off the beach, the governor will host Francesa’s sports radio show from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with co-host Evan Roberts next Monday and Tuesday, according to TheBigLead.

Often called “the Pope” of sports talk radio, Francesa announced he will leave WFAN when his contract ends this year. With that announcement the rumor mill of who might replace the talker spun into high gear, and while it may seem odd, Chris Christie has been said to be in the running to get the job.

Now those rumors are really spinning with the announcement that the New Jersey governor is headed to the mic next week to host two days of sports talk.

Francesa is set to walk away from WFAN on December 15 this year and Gov. Christie’s second and final term as governor is set to end on January 16 of next year. Christie will apparently never win the presidency and with his political career in New Jersey winding down, the timing may be just right for him to transition to sports talk radio.

In any case, sports fans in the metro New York region will have their first chance to see just how Chris Christie will do as a sports radio talk show host.

Maybe Christie will have an encore in talk radio?
