Scottish Labour leader Lamont to quit

Johann Lamont will quit as leader of the Scottish Labour Party, she revealed Saturday, suggesting that the party was too focussed on Westminster and not on Edinburgh.

Glasgow MSP Lamont had been in the role since 2011 and recently vowed to lead her party into the 2016 Holyrood elections.

“I am standing down so that the debate our country demands can take place,” she told the Daily Record.

“I firmly believe that Scotland’s place is in the UK and I do not believe in powers for power’s sake.

“For example, I think power should be devolved from Holyrood to communities. But colleagues need to realise that the focus of Scottish politics is now Holyrood, not Westminster.”

UK Labour leader Ed Miliband said the outgoing Lamont deserved “significant credit for the successful ‘No’ vote in the Scottish referendum campaign.”
