US stocks follow European markets higher

US stocks Wednesday followed European markets higher as a strong data on the German and British industrial sectors boosted confidence in the region's economy.

Five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 55.90 (0.36 percent) to 15,674.12.

The broad-based S&P 500 rose 5.47 (0.31 percent) to 1,768.44, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index tacked on 8.01 (0.20 percent) to 3,947.88.

The gains followed good reports on German factory orders and British industrial production in September, which pushed markets in Britain, France and Germany all higher.

The data came ahead of a much-watched interest rate decision Thursday by the European Central Bank.

Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare said strong liquidity in the US was also continuing to fuel stock market appreciation.
