US stocks rise on strong jobs growth report

US stocks opened higher Friday after a surprisingly strong jobs growth report for October despite the 16-day partial federal government shutdown.

In the first five minutes of trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 30.05 points (0.19 percent) at 15,624.03.

The broad based S&P 500 Index advanced 3.66 (0.21 percent) to 1,750.81, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index added 18.88 (0.49 percent) at 3,876.22.

The Labor Department reported the US economy added 204,000 jobs in October, double what analysts forecast, and revisions to the previous two months added another 60,000 jobs.

But the unemployment rate rose to 7.3 percent from 7.2 percent in September as more than 900,000 people dropped out of the labor force.
